Isaiah 59:7

Listen to this article

“Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in Isaiah that describes the sins and offenses of the people of Israel. It highlights the moral and ethical corruption prevalent among them. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning in context.

“Their feet run to evil”:This phrase portrays the people’s eagerness and haste to engage in sinful activities. It suggests a deliberate and intentional pursuit of wickedness, rather than a mere passive participation.

“They make haste to shed innocent blood”:Here, the prophet Isaiah specifically condemns the act of shedding innocent blood. This refers to the unjust killing of innocent individuals, which is a grave offense in the eyes of God. This phrase highlights the severity of the violence and injustice prevailing in society.

“Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity”:This phrase emphasizes the corrupt nature of their thoughts and intentions. It reveals that their minds are continually preoccupied with sinful and wicked thoughts. It implies a deep-rooted depravity that goes beyond their actions, extending to the very core of their being.

“Wasting and destruction are in their paths”:This line speaks of the consequences of their actions. The people’s pursuit of evil and their disregard for righteousness result in widespread destruction and ruin. It signifies the societal consequences that follow when a nation or community indulges in sinful behaviour.

Overall, this verse depicts a society that has turned away from God’s commandments and embraced wickedness. It highlights the importance of moral righteousness and the consequences that arise when people abandon God’s standards of justice and love for their fellow human beings.

In a broader context, Isaiah 59 is a chapter that addresses the need for repentance and restoration. It emphasises the separation between humanity and God due to sin, but it also offers hope for redemption through sincere repentance and the intervention of God.

As with any study of Scripture, it is beneficial to explore surrounding verses and consider the historical context, as well as other biblical passages that provide further insights into the themes and teachings conveyed.
