Listen to this article

“The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.”

Context:To better understand this verse, let’s explore the context of Isaiah 59. This chapter addresses the sinfulness of the people of Israel and their need for repentance. The prophet Isaiah speaks on behalf of the people, acknowledging their transgressions and recognizing the consequences they face because of their sins.

Lack of Peace:In Isaiah 59:8, it states, “The way of peace they know not.” This verse describes the condition of the people who have lost their way and are unable to find true peace. Despite their religious practices, they fail to experience the peace that comes from a right relationship with God. Their actions and choices have led them astray from God’s path, resulting in spiritual and moral confusion.

Absence of Judgment:The verse further declares, “and there is no judgment in their goings.” This implies that the people have abandoned righteousness and justice. They have disregarded God’s commandments and neglected their responsibility to act justly and fairly. The absence of judgment refers to their failure to discern between right and wrong and to live according to God’s standards.

Crooked Paths:Isaiah continues, “they have made them crooked paths.” The people have deliberately deviated from the straight and righteous path that God had set for them. Their choices and actions have become twisted and distorted, leading them further away from God’s truth and righteousness.

Lack of Peace as a Consequence:The verse concludes, “whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.” This serves as a warning that those who continue on these crooked paths will not find true peace. Their choices and actions have consequences, and the lack of peace they experience is a result of their own disobedience and departure from God’s ways.

Overall, Isaiah 59:8 highlights the spiritual and moral condition of the people of Israel, who have lost their way and are unable to find peace. It emphasises the importance of walking in righteousness, seeking God’s judgment, and following His straight path to experience true peace in life.

As you further explore the book of Isaiah, you will find that it contains numerous prophecies and messages of hope, restoration, and redemption for God’s people. Despite the rebukes and warnings, Isaiah also speaks of God’s faithfulness and His plan to bring salvation through the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.
