Listen to this article

“Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.”

Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains a collection of prophecies given by the prophet Isaiah to the people of Judah and Jerusalem. In Isaiah 6, the prophet receives a vision of God’s majesty and holiness.

Seraphim:In this verse, we encounter a unique heavenly being called a “seraphim.” The term “seraphim” comes from the Hebrew word “saraph,” which means “burning” or “fiery one.” Seraphim are angelic beings associated with worship and praise of God. They are mentioned only in Isaiah 6 and are described as having six wings.

Wings of the Seraphim:Each seraph had six wings, which they used in a specific manner. With two wings, they covered their faces, symbolizing reverence and awe in the presence of God’s holiness. With another two wings, they covered their feet, possibly representing humility and reverence for the sacred ground they stood upon. With the remaining two wings, they flew or moved swiftly to carry out God’s commands.

Symbolism and Lessons:

  • Reverence and Worship:The seraphim’s posture of covering their faces indicates their deep reverence for God’s holiness. It teaches us that when we approach God, we should come with humility, recognizing His greatness and holiness.
  • Humility and Respect:Covering their feet demonstrates humility and respect for God’s presence. It reminds us that we should approach God with a reverent heart, acknowledging His authority and sacredness.
  • Obedience and Readiness:The seraphim’s ability to swiftly move with their wings symbolizes their readiness to carry out God’s commands. It teaches us the importance of being obedient to God’s will and being ready to fulfill His purposes.

Application:

  • Reverent Worship:When we approach God in prayer or worship, let us remember to do so with deep reverence and awe, recognizing His holiness and greatness.
  • Humility and Respect:As we stand before God, let us humble ourselves, acknowledging His authority, and treating His presence with respect.
  • Obedience and Readiness:Just as the seraphim were swift to carry out God’s commands, we should be obedient to God’s Word and always ready to fulfill His purposes in our lives.
  • Heavenly Perspective:The presence of the seraphim reminds us that there is a heavenly realm beyond our earthly understanding. It encourages us to fix our eyes on heavenly things and remember that we are part of a greater spiritual reality.

Remember that this Bible study provides insights based on the text, but it’s essential to study the broader context of the book of Isaiah and consult other reliable biblical resources for a more comprehensive understanding.
