Isaiah 64:6

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Isaiah 64:6 (KJV)

Isaiah speaks here as part of a heartfelt prayer of confession and intercession for the people of Israel. The chapter opens with a plea for God to rend the heavens and come down to deliver His people. In this verse, Isaiah voices the community’s acknowledgment of their sinfulness and their desperate need for God’s mercy and restoration.

The verse begins by declaring that “we are all as an unclean thing.” This refers to the spiritual impurity and moral defilement that sin brings into every life. Like ceremonial uncleanness that kept a person from approaching God’s presence, our sin separates us from His holiness. No one is exempt from this condition.

Isaiah then says that “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” Even our best efforts at goodness are stained and unacceptable before a holy God. The Hebrew imagery suggests a polluted garment, emphasizing the stark contrast between human righteousness and God’s perfect standard. Our attempts to be righteous fall short; they cannot earn His favor.

The imagery continues: “we all do fade as a leaf.” This portrays the transient nature of human life and our vulnerability to weakness and decay. Just as a leaf withers and falls, so our lives are fleeting and fragile. The verse adds that “our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Our sins act as a driving force that sweeps us away from God, leading us astray and separating us from His presence.

This verse is often used to illustrate the doctrine of total depravity and the need for imputed righteousness. It underscores that human righteousness is insufficient for salvation, pointing to the necessity of divine grace. The immediate context, however, is a communal confession of sin and a plea for God’s mercy and restoration, reminding us that even our best works cannot bridge the gap caused by sin.

  • Humility: This verse encourages us to approach God with humility, acknowledging our sinful nature and recognizing that our own efforts fall short of His perfect standard.

  • Dependence on God: It reminds us of our need to rely on God’s grace and forgiveness for salvation rather than trying to earn it through our own merits.

  • Pursuit of righteousness: Although our human efforts are inadequate, this does not mean we should stop striving for righteousness. Rather, we should pursue it by aligning our lives with God’s will, relying on His strength and guidance.

Isaiah 64:6 reminds us of the importance of humility, dependence on God, and the need for His righteousness to cover our own insufficiencies. It points us to the redemptive work of God and highlights our ongoing need for His grace and salvation.

Recognizing our inadequacy should lead us to humbly seek God’s grace and mercy. When we see our righteousness as filthy rags, we are driven to rely not on ourselves but on the righteousness that God provides. This verse calls us to confess our sins, trust in His mercy, and live in grateful dependence on His saving work.
