Isaiah 65:2

I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

Isaiah 65:2 (KJV)

The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. It contains the prophecies of the prophet Isaiah, who delivered God’s messages to the people of Israel during a time of great rebellion and idolatry. Isaiah 65:2 is part of a larger passage where God speaks to Israel about their disobedience and rejection of Him, while also promising future restoration.

In this verse, God expresses His disappointment with the people of Israel. He says that He has stretched out His hands to them all day long, indicating His continual desire to reach out and provide for them. However, despite His love and mercy, the people persist in rebellion. They have chosen to walk in a way that is not good, following their own thoughts and desires rather than seeking God’s will.

The phrase “I have spread out my hands” symbolizes God’s invitation, His longing for His people to return to Him. It demonstrates His desire to extend grace and forgiveness. Despite the people’s rebellion, God still reaches out to them, offering a chance to turn from their wicked ways. The gesture is continuous—“all the day”—showing that God’s patience and mercy are not exhausted by their repeated disobedience.

The verse emphasizes the rebellious nature of the people. They have chosen to follow their own thoughts and desires, disregarding God’s commandments and guidance. This self-will and disobedience have led them astray from the path of righteousness. The phrase “after their own thoughts” reveals the root of their sin: they follow their own devices rather than God’s revealed will.

While this verse was specifically addressed to the people of Israel during Isaiah’s time, it carries a timeless message for believers today. It serves as a reminder that God desires a relationship with His people and extends His hands of love and mercy towards them. However, when we persistently rebel against God, following our own ways instead of seeking His guidance, we distance ourselves from His blessings and the abundant life He intends for us.

  • This verse calls us to examine our hearts and actions, ensuring that we are not walking in rebellion or following our own sinful desires. Instead, we should seek to align ourselves with God’s will and humbly submit to His guidance and instruction.

Isaiah 65:2 serves as a warning against rebellion and an invitation to turn back to God, acknowledging His sovereignty and seeking His ways.
