Isaiah 66:5

Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

There is a profound and distinguishing mark upon the faithful remnant: they tremble at the word of the Lord. This posture is not one of terrifying dread, but of deep reverence, humility, and an unwavering submission to the authority of Scripture. It reveals a heart that takes God’s commands seriously and honors His truth above all human opinion.

Yet, this deep devotion often brings a painful and unexpected trial. The hostility described here does not come from pagan outsiders or distant enemies, but from their own brethren. These are fellow countrymen, family members, or religious peers who actively exclude and mock the faithful. The pain of rejection is magnified when it originates from those closest to us or from within the fellowship of believers.

The persecutors in this passage weaponize their religious zeal. By casting out the faithful and sarcastically declaring, “Let the Lord be glorified,” they mask their hatred and cruelty with pious language. It is a sobering warning about the hypocrisy that can infect religious communities, where people falsely believe—or cynically claim—that their exclusionary actions honor God.

However, the Lord issues a definitive promise of comfort and vindication. While the faithful may endure temporary isolation and sorrow, God’s intervention is absolutely guaranteed. He intimately sees the injustices committed in His name. The dramatic reversal of fortunes is certain: the Lord will appear to the joy of those who reverence His word, while those who wrongfully cast them out under the guise of religious purity will face public and utter shame. For the believer experiencing alienation or misunderstanding from within their own circles, the ultimate hope rests not in self-defense, but in the secure and joyful intervention of the Lord.
