Isaiah 8:13
“Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.”
1. Historical Context: The book of Isaiah was written by the prophet Isaiah during a time of great political and social turmoil in the nation of Judah. Isaiah’s prophecies encompass a wide range of themes, including warnings of judgment, calls to repentance, and messages of hope and restoration.
2. The Fear of the Lord: In this verse, Isaiah encourages the people of Judah to “sanctify” or set apart the Lord of hosts, emphasizing the importance of reverential fear and awe toward God. The fear of the Lord is not about being terrified of God but rather having a deep respect, reverence, and awe for His holiness, power, and authority.
3. Acknowledging God’s Sovereignty: By making the Lord their fear and dread, the people are called to recognize God’s supreme authority over their lives. It involves acknowledging His sovereignty and submitting to His will. This attitude of reverence and humility is crucial for a proper relationship with God.
4. Trusting God in Times of Trouble: Isaiah’s words were spoken during a time when the nation of Judah was facing imminent threats from Assyria. In the face of these challenges, Isaiah encourages the people to place their trust in the Lord. 5. Application to Our Lives: As believers today, we can apply Isaiah’s message to our own lives. We are called to recognize God’s sovereignty, to fear and honor Him, and to trust in Him wholeheartedly. When we acknowledge His supreme authority, we can find comfort and strength in knowing that He is in control of all things. This doesn’t mean that we will be exempt from trials or challenges, but it does mean that we can find peace and security in His presence.
6. Developing a Proper Fear of the Lord: The fear of the Lord is not something we can manufacture on our own, but it is a gift from God. As we study and meditate on His Word, spend time in prayer, and seek a personal relationship with Him, our understanding and reverence for God will deepen. The Holy Spirit works within us to cultivate this proper fear and awe of the Lord.
7. Walking in Obedience: A proper fear of the Lord also leads us to walk in obedience to His commands. When we recognize God’s holiness and authority, we will desire to live in a way that pleases Him. Our reverence for God should motivate us to align our lives with His Word and follow His will.
