Jeremiah 1:12

Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.

Context

Jeremiah had just been called by God to be a prophet to the nations. In response to the Lord’s question, Jeremiah saw a branch of an almond tree. God then spoke the words of this verse, affirming that Jeremiah had seen correctly. The almond tree was a fitting sign, for in the Hebrew language the word for “almond tree” sounds like the word for “watching” or “hastening.” This wordplay reinforced the message: God is actively watching over His word to bring it to pass.

Meaning

God’s declaration, “Thou hast well seen,” is a direct commendation of Jeremiah’s accurate perception. The Lord was not merely approving Jeremiah’s eyesight but confirming that the prophet had rightly understood the vision. The central promise follows: “I will hasten my word to perform it.” This is not a passive waiting but an energetic divine action. God is committed to fulfilling what He has spoken, and He will do so faithfully and at the right time.

Biblical connections

The assurance that God will perform His word echoes the broader biblical truth that God’s word is living and active.
