Jeremiah 12:17

Listen to this article

But if they will not obey, I will vtterly plucke vp, and destroy that nation, saith the Lord. Jeremiah 12:17 (KJV)

Jeremiah 12:17 is a verse from the book of Jeremiah that forms part of a broader prophetic address concerning both Judah and the surrounding nations such as Egypt and Moab. In this passage the Lord declares a stark consequence for disobedience, stating that if the people refuse to obey Him and persist in wickedness, He will “utterly pluck up and destroy” the nation. The language of “pluck them up” and “they shall be no more” emphasizes the completeness of the judgment, indicating a total removal or uprooting of the offending nation.

The verse serves as a stern warning of divine justice. Throughout Scripture God’s desire for obedience is clear, and this passage underscores that disobedience carries severe consequences. The severity of the judgment is highlighted by the phrase “pluck them up,” which conveys a comprehensive and thorough dismantling of the nation that rebels against God’s commands.

At the same time, the context of Jeremiah’s lament over the wickedness and rebellion of his own people reveals a merciful dimension. The warning is not merely punitive; it is also an invitation to repentance. By proclaiming the dire outcome, God provides an opportunity for the people to turn back, seek forgiveness, and align themselves with His will. The purpose of the judgment, therefore, is corrective—intended to bring the people back into covenant relationship with Him.

Overall, Jeremiah 12:17 reminds believers of the importance of obedience to God and the grave consequences that follow persistent disobedience. It calls the nations and God’s own people to heed the warning, repent, and embrace the mercy that God extends to those who return to Him.
