Jeremiah 15:16

Thy wordes were found, and I did eate them, and thy word was vnto mee, the ioy and reioycing of mine heart: for I am called by thy Name, O Lord God of hostes. Jeremiah 15:16 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Judah, warning them of impending judgment due to their disobedience. In this verse Jeremiah expresses his personal experience with God’s Word. While Jeremiah 15:16 speaks of hearing God’s words and responding reverently, the above phrasing captures the same idea of personal experience with God’s Word.

Hunger for God’s Word:

Jeremiah states that he found God’s words and “ate” them, expressing a deep hunger and desire for God’s Word. This metaphor emphasizes his intense commitment to understanding and internalizing the divine message. Like Jeremiah, believers should cultivate a hunger for God’s Word, desiring to study, understand, and internalize the Scriptures, for this hunger is essential for spiritual growth.

Joy and Rejoicing:

Jeremiah affirms that God’s Word brought him joy and rejoicing. The truth and wisdom found in the Scriptures delighted his heart, demonstrating the transformative power of God’s Word in the life of a believer. God’s Word brings joy to our hearts as we encounter its truth and wisdom, providing comfort, encouragement, and strengthening our faith. Regularly spending time in God’s Word can uplift our spirits and strengthen our faith.

Identification with God:

Jeremiah acknowledges that he is called by the name of the Lord God of hosts, identifying himself as a servant of God and committing to fulfill God’s purpose. As believers we are called by the name of the Lord; our identity is found in Him, and we should align our lives with God’s will, seeking to fulfill His purposes for us.
