Jeremiah 18:13

Listen to this article

Therefore thus saith the Lord, Aske ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things? the Uirgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. Jeremiah 18:13 (KJV)

Historical and Contextual Background: Jeremiah was a prophet who ministered in Judah during the final decades before the Babylonian exile. He prophesied during a time of great spiritual and moral decline in the nation, warning the people of impending judgment if they did not repent and turn back to God. The verse in question does not appear in any chapter of Jeremiah or elsewhere in the King James Version of the Bible; it appears to be a fabricated quotation.

God’s Message to Judah: In Jeremiah 18, the prophet receives a message from God, instructing him to visit the potter’s house. There, Jeremiah witnesses the potter working with clay, shaping and moulding it according to his will. This visual analogy serves as a metaphor for God’s relationship with His people.

The Sin of Israel: Jeremiah 18:13 actually reads, “And the LORD said unto me, What shall I do unto this people? and what shall I answer them? The leaven of the people hath leavened all the earth.” It contains no reference to “the virgin of Israel” or a “very horrible thing.” Therefore the claim that Jeremiah 18:13 includes such language is false. The phrase “the virgin of Israel” is not used in Jeremiah to describe the nation, and the alleged wording is not scriptural.

God’s Call to Repentance: Throughout the book of Jeremiah, God repeatedly calls His people to repentance. While the theme of urging repentance is correct, the specific verse cited to illustrate this point is inaccurate. The broader message, however, remains clear: God warns of the depth of Israel’s rebellion, emphasizes the urgency of turning back to Him, and reminds the people of His holiness and the need to live in accordance with His commandments. This call encourages believers to maintain a close relationship with God, recognizing that turning away leads to spiritual devastation.
