Jeremiah 18:14
Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?
Jeremiah 18:14 (KJV)
Context
Jeremiah 18:14 belongs to a larger oracle in which God, through the prophet Jeremiah, confronts the people of Judah for their persistent idolatry and disobedience. The verse uses striking imagery from nature to expose the unnaturalness of Israel’s unfaithfulness. Lebanon’s mountains were known for their snow, which melted and ran down from the rocky heights into streams and pools in the fields below. These cold, flowing waters were refreshing and dependable, a source of life for thirsty travelers.
Meaning
The verse poses two rhetorical questions that assume an obvious answer: no one would abandon such pure, reliable water. The snow of Lebanon refers to the pure and refreshing snow that covers the mountains of Lebanon. The rock of the field is a metaphor for the source from which the snow originates, symbolizing stability and reliability. The cold flowing waters represent fresh and cool streams that flow from distant places, also a valuable and necessary resource. Through this imagery, Jeremiah emphasizes the people’s irrational behavior. He compares their rejection of God’s guidance and their choice to continue in sin with the foolishness of someone forsaking the valuable resources of snow and flowing waters. The people of Judah are essentially turning away from God’s blessings and choosing a path that leads to destruction.
Biblical connections
The imagery of snow and water underscores the reliability and goodness of God’s provision, making Judah’s rebellion not only sinful but utterly senseless. The natural order is consistent, but God’s own people have acted contrary to their very nature as His covenant people. This verse sets up the following verses, where God declares that His people have forgotten Him and burned incense to vanity, causing them to stumble.
Application
This verse serves as a warning to the people of Judah, highlighting the severity of their disobedience and the consequences they will face if they do not repent. It encourages them to reflect on their actions and turn back to God. The passage calls readers to recognize the folly of exchanging the true God for worthless substitutes and to return to Him as the only satisfying and dependable source of life. Remember to read the surrounding verses and the broader context of the book of Jeremiah to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the message God conveyed through the prophet.
Reflection
Overall, Jeremiah 18:14 underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing the blessings and guidance that God provides. It urges us to avoid the folly of forsaking God and His ways in favor of temporary pleasures or sinful pursuits.
