Jeremiah 22:18
Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Iehoiakim the sonne of Iosiah king of Iudah, They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother, or ah sister: they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah Lord, or ah his glory. Jeremiah 22:18 (KJV)
“The LORD said, Write this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.” This declaration forms the heart of Jeremiah 22:18, a prophecy delivered through the prophet Jeremiah concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah. The verse pronounces a severe curse on Jehoiakim, stating that he will have no descendants who will prosper or sit on the Davidic throne. This pronouncement is significant because it threatens the continuation of the Davidic dynasty, a line promised by God to endure forever (cf. 2 Samuel 7:16).
To grasp the full weight of this judgment, one must consider the surrounding context in Jeremiah 22:13‑17. In those verses the Lord rebukes Jehoiakim for his relentless pursuit of wealth and power at the expense of justice and righteousness. He is depicted as a king who oppresses his people, builds a palace with unjust gain, and neglects the responsibilities of a righteous ruler. The curse of childlessness therefore signifies the termination of Jehoiakim’s royal line; no future king will arise from his seed to rule in Judah.
It is important to note that the curse does not imply a physical inability to have children. Rather, it conveys that Jehoiakim’s descendants will not inherit the throne of David nor enjoy the prosperity associated with that covenantal promise. In this way the pronouncement severs the promise of a continuing Davidic dynasty through Jehoiakim’s lineage.
From a broader theological perspective, this verse serves as a stark reminder of God’s justice and faithfulness to His covenant promises. Throughout the Old Testament the Lord holds kings accountable for their actions and their adherence to His commandments. The judgment against Jehoiakim demonstrates the consequences of disobedience and underscores the sovereignty of God’s judgment over earthly authority.
In summary, Jeremiah 22:18 delivers a prophetic warning concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah, declaring that he will be written childless and that none of his offspring will prosper or sit upon the throne of David. This curse reflects divine judgment on Jehoiakim’s wickedness and his failure to uphold the covenant obligations of a Davidic king, and it stands as a sobering illustration of God’s unwavering commitment to justice and covenant fidelity throughout the Scriptures.
