Jeremiah 22:19

He shall be buried with the buriall of an asse, drawen and cast forth beyond the gates of Ierusalem. Jeremiah 22:19 (KJV)

This verse is part of a prophetic message delivered by the prophet Jeremiah to the king of Judah, Jehoiakim. Jeremiah was called by God to deliver messages of warning and judgment to the people of Judah due to their persistent disobedience and idolatry.

In Jeremiah 22:19, God pronounces a judgment upon Jehoiakim. The imagery used in this verse is significant and carries a symbolic meaning. Let’s break it down:

“He shall be buried with the burial of an ass”: The phrase “buried with the burial of an ass” refers to the dishonor and indignity of Jehoiakim’s death. An ass, or a donkey, was considered an unclean animal and was not typically accorded an honourable burial. This image suggests that Jehoiakim would not receive a proper burial, signifying the disgrace that would come upon him.

“Drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem”: This phrase indicates that Jehoiakim’s body would not be given a respectful burial within the city of Jerusalem. Instead, it would be drawn, or dragged, out of the city and cast beyond its gates. This further emphasises the shame and contempt that would be associated with his death.

Historical details about Jehoiakim’s death and burial are uncertain. He died around 609 BC, prior to the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, and there is no contemporary account confirming that his body was dragged beyond the city’s gates.

The purpose of this prophecy was to highlight God’s judgment upon Jehoiakim due to his wickedness and failure to fulfil his responsibilities as king. It serves as a reminder that disobedience and neglect of God’s commands lead to severe consequences.

Overall, Jeremiah 22:19 serves as a powerful example of the consequences of unfaithfulness and the importance of heeding God’s warnings and instructions. It also highlights God’s justice and the fact that even kings are subject to divine judgment when they deviate from righteousness.
