Jeremiah 22:20

Posted on 18 May at 15:01
Listen to this article

“Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed.”

Context:To understand the meaning of this verse, it’s important to consider its context within the book of Jeremiah. In this chapter, Jeremiah prophesies against the kings of Judah, particularly Jehoiakim and Jehoiachin, for their unrighteousness and failure to uphold justice and righteousness. God sends Jeremiah to deliver messages of warning and judgment against them and the nation of Judah.

Symbolic Language:The verse uses symbolic language to convey a message. “Lebanon” and “Bashan” were both known for their dense forests and fertile lands. They were regions associated with strength, beauty, and prosperity. In this context, they are symbolic of the kingdoms and alliances that Judah had sought for support and protection.

“Cry” and “lift up thy voice”:The command to cry and lift up the voice emphasizes the urgency and seriousness of the situation. Jeremiah is instructed to raise his voice and proclaim a message of judgment.

“For all thy lovers are destroyed”:This phrase refers to the nations or alliances that Judah had sought as political allies and placed their trust in. Despite their dependence on these alliances, God declares that they will all be destroyed. This pronouncement serves as a warning and a judgment against the false hope and misplaced trust that Judah had placed in human alliances rather than in God.

  • Overall:Jeremiah 22:20 warns against trusting in earthly alliances and calls for a reliance on God.
