Jeremiah 25:15

For thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.

Jeremiah 25:15 (KJV)

Jeremiah was called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Judah. In this chapter he prophesies about the coming judgment on Judah and the surrounding nations because of their disobedience and idolatry.

God instructs Jeremiah to take the “wine cup of this fury” and make all the nations drink from it. The cup symbolizes God’s wrath and judgment. Just as wine intoxicates a person, the nations will experience the consequences of their sinful actions. The act of drinking from the cup signifies receiving the full measure of God’s judgment.

The verse identifies God as the LORD God of Israel, emphasizing His authority over all nations. He sends Jeremiah as His messenger to proclaim judgment and warning to every nation that has turned away from Him. Jeremiah’s obedience is confirmed in the following verse (Jeremiah 25:17), where he takes the cup and makes the nations drink, though this was done in vision and prophecy rather than a literal journey.

Jeremiah is to cause “all the nations” to drink from the cup, indicating that God’s judgment is not limited to Judah but extends to every nation that has acted wickedly. The judgment serves as a consequence for rebellion against God, a call to repentance, and a demonstration of His righteousness and justice. Through this judgment God seeks to bring the nations to humility and a recognition of their need for Him.

Although the verse addresses ancient nations, it carries a broader message for contemporary believers. It reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the inevitable consequences of turning away from God. It also calls each person to repentance and underscores God’s sovereignty over all peoples.

Jeremiah 25:15 highlights God’s judgment upon the nations and the symbolism of the cup representing His fury and wrath. It emphasizes His authority and sovereignty over all nations and calls for repentance, humility, and recognition of His righteousness.
