Jeremiah 27:1

In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word unto Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

Jeremiah 27:1 (KJV)

Jeremiah ministered in the kingdom of Judah during a period of great upheaval. This verse dates the prophecy to the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, placing the events around 609 BC. Josiah, a reforming king, had recently died. His son Jehoahaz reigned only three months before Pharaoh Necho of Egypt deposed him and placed Jehoiakim on the throne. This historical marker anchors the prophecy in real events and shows that God speaks into specific historical circumstances.

The verse emphasizes that the word came to Jeremiah from the Lord. This highlights the divine origin of the message and the authority behind it. Jeremiah was not speaking on his own behalf but was conveying the words of God Himself. As a prophet, Jeremiah was called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Judah, warning them about the consequences of their actions and the judgment that was to come. The phrase “came this word unto Jeremiah from the Lord” underscores the importance of recognizing the authority and authenticity of God’s word.

Jehoiakim’s reign was marked by rebellion against God. He was an ungodly king who disregarded the Lord’s commandments and led the people astray. God sent Jeremiah to proclaim His word during this time to call the people to repentance and warn them of the impending judgment that would come as a result of their disobedience. The mention of Jehoiakim’s reign is not incidental; it identifies the audience and the era, highlighting that God’s word addresses particular situations and rulers.

  • The Importance of God’s Word: Just as Jeremiah received a message from the Lord, we also have the written Word of God in the Bible. It is essential for us to value and study the Scriptures, allowing them to guide our lives.

  • Obedience and Repentance: Jehoiakim’s disobedience brought judgment upon the nation of Judah. It serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences, and we need to heed God’s warnings and turn from our sinful ways.

  • God’s Faithfulness: Despite the rebelliousness of the people and their leaders, God continued to send prophets like Jeremiah to call them back to Him. This demonstrates God’s faithfulness and His desire for restoration and reconciliation.

This opening verse establishes the divine origin and historical specificity of the prophecy, reminding readers that God’s word is timely and relevant to the actual conditions of His people. Further study of the surrounding chapters can provide additional insights into the context and message of Jeremiah’s prophecy.
