Jeremiah 30:21

Listen to this article

“And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the LORD.”

Historical and Contextual Background:Jeremiah was a prophet in ancient Israel who delivered messages from God to the people of Judah during a time of great turmoil and impending destruction. This particular verse is part of a larger section known as the “Book of Consolation” in Jeremiah, where the prophet brings a message of hope and restoration to the people.

The Restoration of Israel:Jeremiah 30 speaks of the restoration and return of the Israelites from exile. God promises to bring them back to their land and establish them once again as a unified nation. In verse 21, God specifically mentions the restoration of their nobles and their governor.

Nobles and Governor:The phrase “their nobles shall be of themselves” refers to the restoration of leadership within the nation. After the exile, Israel would have leaders and nobles from among their own people. This indicates that the Israelites would regain their autonomy and self-governance, as opposed to being ruled by foreign powers.

The phrase “their governor shall proceed from the midst of them” highlights that their future leader, their governor or king, would arise from their own midst. This suggests that the Israelites would have a ruler from among their own people, chosen and anointed by God.

Divine Selection:The verse continues, saying, “I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me.” This statement emphasizes that God Himself would appoint and enable the chosen governor to draw near to Him. It implies that this leader would have a special relationship with God, perhaps indicating that the ruler would be guided and directed by divine wisdom.

God’s Approval:The verse concludes with a rhetorical question from God: “for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me?” This question emphasizes the significance of the leader’s devotion and commitment to God. It suggests that the chosen governor would have a sincere and wholehearted desire to approach and serve God faithfully.

Overall, Jeremiah 30:21 speaks of the restoration of leadership in Israel, with the nobles and governor being restored from among the Israelites. God promises to appoint a leader who would draw near to Him, demonstrating a strong commitment to God. This verse offers hope and assurance to the Israelites of a future restoration and a leader chosen by God Himself.
