Jeremiah 36:17

And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?

Jeremiah 36:17 (KJV)

This verse is set during the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah. Jeremiah had received a message from the Lord and instructed his scribe, Baruch, to write it on a scroll. Baruch then read the scroll in the temple, which caused a stir among the people and eventually led to the scroll being brought before the king’s officials.

The officials’ question, “Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?” is not about the physical act of writing with ink, which they could see, but about the process and source of the words. They want to know if the words were Jeremiah’s own composition or if they were given to him directly. The phrase “at his mouth” indicates that the words came from Jeremiah’s dictation. Baruch’s answer in the following verse confirms that Jeremiah pronounced all the words with his mouth, and Baruch wrote them with ink in the book.

The officials’ inquiry demonstrates their recognition of the significance and authority of Jeremiah’s words. They acknowledge that the words come directly from the prophet’s mouth, and they want to understand the method employed to accurately capture those words. The question also reflects a natural human desire to understand how a human can accurately transmit a divine message.

The recording of Jeremiah’s prophecies was crucial because it provided a tangible and lasting record of the divine messages received by the prophet. It allowed for widespread dissemination, ensuring that the words of the Lord could be heard and heeded by a broader audience. Baruch played a vital role in this process by acting as Jeremiah’s secretary and faithfully transcribing the words revealed to the prophet.

This verse emphasizes the importance of accurately preserving and transmitting God’s Word. It highlights the responsibility of those entrusted with recording and disseminating divine messages. Just as Baruch diligently wrote down Jeremiah’s prophecies, we are called to honor the Word of God by treating it with reverence, accuracy, and faithfulness. In our modern context, we have been blessed with the preservation of the Bible, which contains the inspired and authoritative Word of God. As believers, we have a responsibility to read, study, and accurately understand the Scriptures. We should approach the Bible with a desire to grasp its message, seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit. Additionally, we are encouraged to share the Word of God with others, ensuring its message reaches those who need it.

Furthermore, Jeremiah’s story reminds us that God’s Word is timeless and relevant. Just as the prophecies given to Jeremiah addressed the specific circumstances of his time, the Scriptures speak to us today, providing guidance, comfort, correction, and hope. By engaging with the Word of God, we can deepen our relationship with Him, align our lives with His will, and find wisdom for every aspect of our lives.

In summary, Jeremiah 36:17 underscores the importance of faithfully preserving and disseminating God’s Word. It calls us to approach the Scriptures with reverence, accurately understand their message, and share it with others so that the Word of God can continue to impact lives and bring transformation.
