Jeremiah 36:2
“Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.”
Context:Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Israel and Judah. At the time of this verse, Jeremiah had been prophesying for about twenty-three years, starting from the reign of Josiah, the righteous king of Judah. The people had turned away from God, engaged in idolatry, and committed various sins, which led to God’s judgment upon them.
A Roll of a Book:God instructed Jeremiah to take a scroll or a book and write down all the words that He had spoken to him over the years. This roll would contain the prophecies of judgment against Israel, Judah, and even the surrounding nations. The use of a scroll indicates the significance and permanence of God’s message.
God’s Judgment:The prophecies contained in the roll of the book were directed against Israel, Judah, and the nations. Throughout Jeremiah’s ministry, he delivered messages of warning, judgment, and the consequences of the people’s disobedience. God desired to communicate His righteous judgment and give them an opportunity to repent and turn back to Him.
Extent of God’s Messages:The verse mentions that the roll of the book would contain all the words spoken by God to Jeremiah against Israel, Judah, and the nations from the time of Josiah until the current period. This indicates the extensive nature of Jeremiah’s prophecies and the long-standing persistence of God’s message to His people.
Faithfulness of Jeremiah:The fact that Jeremiah was instructed to write down all the messages he had received over the years demonstrates his faithfulness as a prophet. Despite facing opposition, persecution, and rejection, Jeremiah remained committed to delivering God’s word. He diligently recorded the messages God had spoken to him and faithfully proclaimed them to the people.
- God’s Word endures:The roll of the book symbolizes the enduring nature of God’s Word. It emphasizes the importance of preserving and passing down His messages faithfully from one generation to another. The Bible, as God’s written Word, remains relevant and authoritative for us today.
- God’s patience and warning:Despite the people’s rebellion, God patiently continued to send His messages through Jeremiah. This demonstrates His desire for repentance and restoration rather than immediate judgment. It highlights the importance of heeding God’s warnings and turning back to Him when we go astray.
- Faithfulness in sharing God’s Word:Like Jeremiah, we are called to be faithful messengers of God’s Word. We should diligently study, understand, and communicate the Scriptures, proclaiming His truth with boldness and love, even in the face of opposition or indifference.
- Reflecting on God’s judgment:The prophecies of judgment in Jeremiah’s scroll remind us of the consequences of disobedience and the seriousness of sin. It prompts us to examine our own lives, seek forgiveness, and align ourselves with God’s will.
Jeremiah 36:2 captures the essence of Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry, highlighting the importance of recording and sharing God’s Word faithfully, the reality of divine judgment, and the call to repentance.
