Jeremiah 4:16

“Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Jeremiah 4:16 (KJV) says: "Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah."

Historical Context:Jeremiah was a prophet who served during the last days of the Kingdom of Judah, just before its destruction by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. He was called by God to deliver a message of judgment and warning to the people of Judah for their disobedience and idolatry. In this particular verse, Jeremiah is instructed to proclaim a message of impending disaster to the surrounding nations.

  • Proclaiming God’s Message:

Jeremiah was not only called to deliver God’s message to the people of Judah but also to the surrounding nations. In this verse, he is commanded to make mention to the nations and publish against Jerusalem. God wanted the nations to be aware of the impending judgment that would come upon Jerusalem and the cities of Judah. This shows God’s concern for justice and His desire to give warning before executing judgment.

Watchers from a Far Country:The verse speaks of watchers coming from a far country. These watchers are most likely a metaphorical representation of the Babylonian army that would invade Judah. They would act as God’s instrument of judgment. The fact that they come from a far country emphasizes that this judgment is not a local conflict but a consequence of the sins of Judah reaching a point where God had to intervene.

The Voice against the Cities of Judah:The watchers are described as giving out their voice against the cities of Judah. This refers to the battle cries and shouts of the invading army as they conquer the cities and bring destruction upon the land. It signifies the impending doom and the terror that would befall the cities of Judah as a result of their rebellion against God.

Application:

  • Jeremiah’s message of impending judgment has relevance for us today. It serves as a reminder that God is just and will hold nations accountable for their actions. It also highlights the importance of heeding God’s warnings and turning from sin. God gives opportunities for repentance and reconciliation before judgment falls.

We can apply this verse by examining our own lives and considering whether there are areas of disobedience or idolatry that need to be addressed. We should also be mindful of the consequences of our actions and seek to live in obedience to God’s commands.

In summary, Jeremiah 4:16 conveys a message of impending judgment upon Jerusalem and the cities of Judah. It reminds us of God’s justice, His desire to warn before executing judgment, and the need for repentance and obedience.
