Jeremiah 42:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:01
Listen to this article

“And that the LORD thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.”

Context:Jeremiah 42 is set in the aftermath of the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. A remnant of the people, including the commander Johanan and others, approached the prophet Jeremiah seeking God’s guidance. They were afraid of the Babylonians and were considering fleeing to Egypt for safety. They asked Jeremiah to pray and seek God’s direction on their behalf.

Seeking God’s Guidance:In verse 3, the people express their desire for God to reveal the way they should walk and the actions they should take. They acknowledge the need for divine guidance in their decision-making process. This reflects their recognition of God’s sovereignty and their dependence on Him for direction in their lives.

Trusting God’s Will:The people’s request in this verse demonstrates their willingness to submit to God’s will. They are not asking for a specific answer that aligns with their own desires; instead, they are seeking the way that God wants them to go. This attitude reflects humility and a desire to align their lives with God’s purposes.

Importance of Seeking God’s Guidance:This passage highlights the importance of seeking God’s guidance in our lives. It reminds us that decisions we make, especially significant ones, should be made in light of God’s wisdom and direction. Proverbs 3:5-6 affirms this by saying, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

God’s Response:As the story unfolds in Jeremiah 42, God tells the people not to go to Egypt but to remain in the land of Judah. He assures them of His protection if they obey His command and promises to build them up and not destroy them. However, despite this clear instruction, the people refuse to obey and insist on going to Egypt, ultimately bringing destruction upon themselves.

Lessons for Us:This passage teaches us several lessons. First, seeking God’s guidance is crucial, but it is equally important to be willing to accept and obey His answer, even if it goes against our own preferences or seems difficult. Second, it reminds us that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9), and His guidance is for our ultimate good. Third, it emphasizes the importance of aligning our desires and decisions with God’s will, acknowledging His authority over our lives.

  • In conclusion:Jeremiah 42:3 illustrates the significance of seeking God’s guidance and submitting to His will. It serves as a reminder for us to trust in the Lord, seek His direction in our decision-making, and be willing to follow His leading, even when it may be contrary to our own understanding or desires.
