Jeremiah 42:5

Listen to this article

Then they sayd to Ieremiah, The Lord be a true and faithfull witnesse betweene vs, if we doe not, euen according to all things for the which the Lord thy God shall send thee to vs. Jeremiah 42:5 (KJV)

The verse opens with the remnant acknowledging Jeremiah as a prophet sent by the Lord. Their declaration that the LORD is a true and faithful witness between them and the Lord reveals a clear recognition of Jeremiah’s divine authority and a sincere desire to know God’s will for their community.

Seek God’s Guidance: This acknowledgment underscores the importance of seeking God’s guidance when faced with difficult decisions or uncertain circumstances. By turning to Jeremiah, the people demonstrate a humble posture, recognizing that divine direction is essential for navigating the challenges before them.

Commitment to Obedience: The people expressly commit to follow whatever instructions the LORD, through Jeremiah, may give. They understand that Jeremiah’s words are not merely his own but are divinely inspired, and their willingness to obey reflects a deep reverence for God’s commands and a readiness to act in accordance with His will.

Trusting in God’s Purpose: By seeking Jeremiah’s counsel, the remnant places its trust in the Lord’s sovereign plan. They acknowledge that God has a purpose in sending Jeremiah and that obedience will align them with God’s intentions, even when the path ahead is fraught with difficulty.

Overall, Jeremiah 42:5 highlights three interrelated truths: the necessity of seeking God’s guidance, the call to obediently follow His revealed instructions, and the confidence that God’s purpose is trustworthy and good. Believers are encouraged to approach God with humility, to rely on His faithful witness, and to trust that His direction leads to ultimate good, even in the most challenging times.
