Jeremiah 42:6

Whether it be good, or whether it be euill, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee, that it may be well with vs, when we obey the voice of the Lord our God. Jeremiah 42:6 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was a prophet who spoke on behalf of God to the people of Judah during a time of great turmoil and impending judgment. In this chapter the context is set in the aftermath of the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem, and a remnant of the people is seeking guidance from Jeremiah.

Seeking God’s Guidance:

The verse begins with the people expressing their willingness to listen and obey the voice of the Lord. They approach Jeremiah, acknowledging that he is a messenger sent by God, and they ask for direction, recognizing that their future—whether it be good or evil—depends on how they respond to God’s instruction.

Trusting in God’s Wisdom:

The people’s response demonstrates an initial recognition of God’s sovereignty and trust in His wisdom. They understand that God’s plans and instructions are intended for their well‑being, even if they do not fully grasp the reasons behind them. However, history shows that the people later disregarded God’s counsel, leading to further consequences and revealing a lack of full commitment to obeying God’s commands.

The Importance of Obedience:

The passage emphasizes that obedience to God’s voice brings His presence and protection. The people are reminded that adherence to divine counsel results in preservation, while neglecting it can lead to adverse consequences. This underscores the biblical principle that blessings are linked with consistent obedience.

Application:

This verse reminds us of the significance of seeking and obeying God’s voice in our lives. Just as the people of Judah sought guidance from Jeremiah, we should seek guidance from God through prayer, studying His Word, and listening to trusted spiritual leaders. Declaring obedience is not enough; it must be followed by actions that align with God’s will. When faced with decisions or uncertain situations, our commitment to obey God’s direction—trusting that He will be with us and preserve us—is essential.

In summary, Jeremiah 42:6 teaches the importance of seeking God’s guidance, trusting in His wisdom, and committing to obedience, knowing that God promises to be with those who heed His word and to preserve them.
