Jeremiah 42:7
“And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah.”
Jeremiah 42:7 (KJV) is part of a larger narrative found in Jeremiah 42. In this chapter, the remnant of the people of Judah who had been left in the land after the Babylonian invasion sought counsel from the prophet Jeremiah. They asked him to pray to the Lord and seek His guidance on what they should do.
Historical Context:At this point in history, Jerusalem had been conquered by Babylon, and many of its inhabitants had been taken into captivity. The remnant left behind, including some military officials and people of different social statuses, were seeking direction on whether they should stay in the land or go to Egypt to escape further hardship or potential retaliation from Babylon.
Seeking God’s Guidance:The people recognised the importance of seeking God’s guidance in their decision. They acknowledged Jeremiah as a prophet of God and believed that he could intercede for them and receive a word from the Lord. They made a commitment to obey whatever God would instruct them to do (Jeremiah 42:5-6).
The Duration of Waiting:Jeremiah agreed to their request and told them to wait for ten days. After this period, the word of the Lord would come to him, and he would relay the message to them (Jeremiah 42:7-8).
Patience and Trust:Waiting for ten days required patience and trust on the part of the people. It demonstrated their willingness to rely on God’s timing rather than rushing into a decision without seeking His counsel.
Divine Revelation:After the ten-day waiting period, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, and he delivered God’s message to the people (Jeremiah 42:9-22). The Lord instructed them not to go to Egypt, warning them of the calamity that awaited them if they disobeyed. However, the people refused to listen to the word of the Lord through Jeremiah and chose to go against His guidance (Jeremiah 43:1-7).
