Jeremiah 44:26

Listen to this article

“Therefore hear ye the word of the Lord, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the Lord, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord God liveth.”

Jeremiah 44:26 (KJV) says: This verse is part of a larger message that the prophet Jeremiah conveyed to the Jewish people who had settled in the land of Egypt. At this time, the people of Judah had disregarded the warnings and prophecies of Jeremiah, choosing instead to continue their idolatrous practices and reject the Lord’s commandments.

In this verse, God declares that He has sworn by His great name that His name will no longer be mentioned in the land of Egypt, particularly by the people of Judah. This statement signifies a severe judgment against them due to their persistent disobedience and refusal to turn back to the Lord.

Here are some key points to consider when studying this verse:

  • God’s Warning:The verse begins with an exhortation for all the people of Judah residing in Egypt to listen to the word of the Lord. This emphasizes God’s desire for His people to hear and heed His message.
  • Swearing by God’s Name:God declares that He has sworn by His great name. This signifies the seriousness of His proclamation and highlights the importance of His name and reputation.
  • Cessation of Praise:The Lord declares that His name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt. This statement suggests a severe consequence, implying that the people of Judah will no longer acknowledge or worship the Lord. It indicates that God’s presence and blessings will be withdrawn from them.
  • Denying the Living God:The phrase, “The Lord God liveth,” was a common expression used to acknowledge and honor God’s existence and sovereignty. By stating that this expression will no longer be uttered by the people of Judah in Egypt, God is emphasizing their rejection of Him and their preference for false gods.
  • Divine Judgment:This verse reflects God’s judgment upon the people of Judah for their persistent disobedience, idolatry, and failure to repent. God warns them of the consequences of their actions, illustrating the seriousness of their rebellion.

Overall, Jeremiah 44:26 serves as a solemn declaration of God’s judgment against the people of Judah living in Egypt. It underscores the importance of obedience, repentance, and honoring God’s name. It also reminds us of the consequences that can result from persistently rejecting God’s commands and turning to idolatry.
