Jeremiah 44:28

Listen to this article

“Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, and all the remnant of Judah, that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall know whose words shall stand, mine, or theirs.”

Context:Jeremiah 44 records a message from the prophet Jeremiah to the Jews who had settled in Egypt after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. These Jews had continued to worship false gods and engage in idolatry, despite Jeremiah’s warnings and the consequences they had already experienced in Judah. Jeremiah prophesied that God’s judgment would come upon them in Egypt as well.

Bible Study:

Historical Background:Jeremiah’s ministry took place during a time of political instability and spiritual decline in Judah. The people had turned away from God and embraced idolatry, which led to their destruction at the hands of the Babylonians. Some Jews who survived the Babylonian invasion fled to Egypt, hoping for safety and security. However, they persisted in their idolatrous practices there.

God’s Warning and Judgment:Jeremiah was appointed by God as a prophet to deliver His messages and warnings to the people of Judah. In this verse, God declares that only a small number of those who went to Egypt would escape the sword and return to the land of Judah. The rest, the remnant of Judah, would face the consequences of their disobedience. God’s judgment would demonstrate whose words would stand: His or theirs.

Faithfulness of God’s Word:The key theme of this verse is the faithfulness and reliability of God’s word. The people in Egypt had put their trust in their own plans, disregarding God’s warnings and relying on false gods. However, God asserts that His words will ultimately prevail. His prophecies concerning the judgment and consequences for their idolatry would come to pass.

God’s Sovereignty and Authority:Jeremiah 44:28 emphasizes God’s sovereignty and authority over the affairs of His people. Despite the people’s disobedience and their attempts to resist God’s word, God’s plans and purposes would be fulfilled. It serves as a reminder that God’s will cannot be thwarted by human actions or desires.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Word:The verse encourages us to place our trust in God’s word rather than our own plans or desires. God’s word is unchanging, reliable, and trustworthy. We should seek to align our lives with His truth and submit to His will.
  • Repentance and Obedience:Just as the people in Jeremiah’s time were called to repentance and obedience, we are also called to examine our lives and turn away from any idolatry or disobedience. We should heed God’s warnings and strive to live in accordance with His commands.
  • God’s Faithfulness in Judgment and Promise:This verse also reminds us of God’s faithfulness in both judgment and promise. God’s judgments are sure, and His promises will be fulfilled. We can take comfort in knowing that God’s word stands firm, and we can trust in His ultimate justice and the fulfillment of His promises.

In conclusion, Jeremiah 44:28 is a powerful reminder of the faithfulness and authority of God’s word. It calls us to trust in His word, repent of our sins, and live in obedience to His commands. It also assures us that God’s judgments and promises will come to pass, demonstrating His sovereignty and faithfulness.
