Jeremiah 44:29

Listen to this article

“And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the LORD, that I will punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil”

Context:Certainly! Let’s delve into Jeremiah 44:29 from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. Here is the verse in question:

Jeremiah 44:29 is part of a message that the prophet Jeremiah delivered to the remnant of Judah who had fled to Egypt seeking refuge after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. The people had persistently engaged in idolatry, and despite numerous warnings from God through the prophets, they refused to repent and turn back to Him.

In this verse, God is foretelling the punishment that will befall the people in Egypt as a result of their disobedience. He declares that He will bring judgment upon them in that very place. The purpose of this punishment is twofold: first, to serve as a sign to the people, indicating the certainty of God’s words coming to pass, and second, to bring about retribution for their evil deeds.

Let’s explore the verse in more detail:

  • 1. “And this shall be a sign unto you”: The phrase “a sign unto you” refers to the forthcoming punishment that God will inflict upon the people. It will serve as a visible and unmistakable evidence of God’s faithfulness to His word and His commitment to justice.
  • 2. “saith the LORD”: This phrase emphasizes that the message being conveyed is from the Lord Himself. Jeremiah is acting as a prophet, speaking on behalf of God and relaying His warning to the people.
  • 3. “that I will punish you in this place”: God explicitly states that He will bring punishment upon the people who sought refuge in Egypt. Despite their attempt to escape the consequences of their idolatry, they will not go unpunished. The specific location of their punishment emphasizes that there is no escaping the reach of God’s judgment.
  • 4. “that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil”: This phrase underscores the certainty of God’s words coming to fruition. The people will witness the fulfillment of God’s warnings against them, which will result in negative consequences or calamity. It serves as a reminder that God’s word is steadfast and reliable, and His promises of both blessings and judgments will be fulfilled.
