Jeremiah 44:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:12
Listen to this article

“Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.”

This verse is a part of a message from the prophet Jeremiah to the remnant of the people of Judah who had fled to Egypt after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. It is important to understand the context of this verse to grasp its meaning fully.

In the preceding verses, Jeremiah rebukes the people of Judah who had settled in Egypt. They had taken up idolatrous practices, worshiping the “queen of heaven” and burning incense to other gods.

Jeremiah warned them that their idolatry and disobedience had provoked God’s anger and judgment upon them.

Jeremiah 44:6 begins with the phrase “Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth.” Here, God speaks through Jeremiah, expressing His righteous anger and judgment upon the people of Judah.

The phrase “poured forth” signifies the outpouring of God’s wrath, which was a result of the people’s persistent rebellion and refusal to repent.

The verse continues, “and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.” This statement emphasizes that God’s anger was directed specifically at the cities of Judah, including Jerusalem. It underscores the seriousness of their sin and the consequences they faced as a result.

The final part of the verse states, “and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.” This phrase points to the current state of destruction and desolation that had befallen the cities of Judah and Jerusalem. It serves as a reminder to the people of Judah in Egypt of the devastating consequences of their actions and the fulfillment of God’s judgment.

Overall, Jeremiah 44:6 highlights God’s righteous anger and judgment upon the people of Judah for their persistent rebellion and idolatry. It underscores the severity of their sin and serves as a warning to us today to remain faithful and obedient to God, avoiding practices that go against His commands.

It reminds us of the importance of repentance and the consequences that can result from a persistent rejection of God’s will.
