Jeremiah 44:7
“Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,”
In this verse, we find Jeremiah addressing a specific group of people‑those who had knowledge that their wives were offering incense to other gods. These individuals were part of the community of Israelites who had settled in the land of Egypt, particularly in a region called Pathros.
To understand the context of this verse, we need to look at the preceding verses. Prior to this, Jeremiah had been sent by God to deliver a message to the people of Judah, warning them of the impending judgment if they did not turn away from their idolatrous practices. However, the people did not listen and persisted in their disobedience, which ultimately led to the fall of Jerusalem and their exile to Babylon.
Some of the remnant who escaped the destruction of Jerusalem fled to Egypt for refuge, despite Jeremiah’s counsel not to do so. However, rather than heeding the prophet’s words, they continued their idolatrous practices, including offering incense to other gods, as mentioned in this verse.
It is important to note that throughout the Old Testament, God consistently emphasized the worship of Him alone and commanded His people to abstain from idolatry. Idolatry was not only a violation of the first and second commandments (Exodus 20:3-6), but it also demonstrated a lack of trust and faith in God’s sovereignty and provision.
Jeremiah’s message to the people who had settled in Egypt was a reminder of their previous disobedience and the consequences that befell them as a result. He sought to warn them that continuing in their idolatry would bring about further judgment from God. However, as we will see in the subsequent verses, the people were defiant and refused to listen to the prophet’s admonition.
In summary, Jeremiah 44:7 highlights the sinful practices of a group of Israelites who settled in Egypt and persisted in their idolatry despite the warnings of the prophet Jeremiah. This verse serves as a reminder of the dangers and consequences of turning away from God and engaging in idolatrous worship.
