Jeremiah 46:10 (KJV)
Context
The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was called by God to deliver messages of judgment and warning to the people of Judah because of their persistent disobedience and idolatry. In this particular verse, Jeremiah is delivering a message concerning Egypt and its impending judgment.
Meaning
The phrase day of the Lord refers to a time when God intervenes in human history to execute judgment and fulfill His purposes. It often signifies a day of reckoning and divine intervention against the enemies of God and His people. In this verse, it denotes a day of vengeance when God will bring judgment upon Egypt for its rebellion against Him.
The title Lord God of hosts (Yahweh of Armies) underscores His absolute sovereignty and power over all nations and armies. The verse emphasizes that God will avenge Himself on His adversaries. The people of Egypt had opposed God and acted as adversaries to His plans and purposes. As a just and righteous God, He will bring judgment upon them for their actions.
The imagery of the sword devouring and being made drunk with blood symbolizes the severity and extent of the judgment that will fall upon Egypt. It portrays the violence and destruction that will come upon the nation as a result of their rebellion. This serves as a vivid description of the consequences of opposing God.
The verse mentions a sacrifice that the Lord God of hosts has in the north country by the river Euphrates. This sacrifice likely refers to the impending destruction of Egypt at the hands of the Babylonians, who were to the north of Egypt. The Euphrates River was a significant landmark in the region. The sacrifice represents the offering of Egypt as a nation to be destroyed, as a consequence of their disobedience.
