Jeremiah 5:16

Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

Jeremiah 5:16 (KJV)

Jeremiah speaks here during a time when Judah’s persistent rebellion had brought God’s judgment near. In the surrounding passage, God declares that He will bring a nation from afar to punish His people (Jeremiah 5:15). This verse describes that invading army, which historical context identifies as the Babylonians, though the text itself does not name them.

The “quiver” is the container that holds arrows, the weapon of ancient warfare. By comparing it to an “open sepulchre,” Jeremiah pictures a tomb that is visible and ready to receive the dead. The enemy’s weapons are not merely instruments of battle; they are instruments of death, and the open grave shows that destruction is certain and inescapable for those who face this army.

The phrase “they are all mighty men” emphasizes the strength and skill of the invading warriors. They are not a disorganized rabble but a formidable force, well-equipped and experienced in war. This description underscores the severity of the threat and the helplessness of Judah apart from divine intervention.

This verse warns that sin brings serious consequences, and that God may use even powerful nations to accomplish His purposes. Yet the might of the enemy is not ultimate; these “mighty men” are tools in God’s hand. The proper response is not despair but repentance, turning back to God before judgment falls.

The open sepulchre confronts us with the reality of death and the weight of divine judgment. It calls us to examine our own hearts and to take seriously the holiness of God. Even in judgment, His purposes are just, and His call to repentance remains a path of hope.
