Jeremiah 5:20

Listen to this article

“Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,”

Context:Jeremiah 5:20 is the beginning of a verse in which God is instructing Jeremiah, a prophet, to deliver a message to the people of Israel. Throughout the book of Jeremiah, God often uses the prophet as a mouthpiece to convey His warnings and judgments to the nation.

This specific verse serves as an introduction, calling upon Jeremiah to proclaim a message. The phrase “Declare this in the house of Jacob” refers to the people of Israel, as “Jacob” is a reference to the patriarch who was later renamed Israel. Similarly, “publish it in Judah” specifies the southern kingdom of Israel, which was composed mainly of the tribe of Judah.

The context of Jeremiah 5:20 is important for a comprehensive understanding of the verse and its significance. Prior to this verse, Jeremiah describes the people’s unfaithfulness, idolatry, and wickedness. God, in His righteousness, is about to bring judgment upon His people for their disobedience. Thus, the message that Jeremiah is about to deliver is a warning of impending consequences.

By starting with the call to declare the message, God emphasizes the importance of spreading the word to the entire nation. The purpose is to ensure that everyone is aware of the coming judgment, giving them an opportunity to repent and turn back to God. The urgency of this message underscores God’s desire for His people to recognize their sinfulness and seek reconciliation with Him.
