Jeremiah 5:26

For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

Context

Jeremiah prophesied to the people of Judah, warning them of their disobedience and the impending judgment. In this passage, he exposes the corruption that had become common among them. The opening of the chapter records God’s search for one person who does justice and seeks truth, showing how rare righteousness had become. Against that backdrop, Jeremiah 5:26 describes the wickedness found within the covenant community itself.

Meaning

The verse begins, “For among my people are found wicked men.” This is not a threat from outside; the wicked are inside the people of God. The Hebrew imagery compares them to fowlers, those who catch birds with snares. They “lay wait” and “set a trap” to “catch men.” Their evil is not open but cunning and premeditated. They deliberately and deceitfully ensnare others for their own gain. This is predatory behavior, not random sin.

Biblical connections

The trap imagery continues a theme found throughout Scripture. In the New Testament, being caught in a trap is used metaphorically for being ensnared by sin or the devil (2 Timothy 2:26). Here, however, the focus is on the wicked as the agents of entrapment. They are the ones setting the snares, and their victims are other people. This connection shows that the danger of deception within the community of faith is a recurring biblical concern.

Application

This verse calls for discernment. Even among those who claim to follow God, there can be individuals who deceive and lead others astray. The traps may take the form of false teaching, manipulation, or temptations that pull people away from God’s path. Believers are urged to be cautious, not blindly trusting every person who appears godly. The verse also prompts self-examination: are we ensnaring others through deceit, or are we walking in integrity?

Reflection

God sees the wickedness among His people and will bring justice. Although the wicked may succeed in catching others, they will not escape His judgment. This is a sobering reminder that sin within the community of faith is especially grievous to God. It encourages believers to rely on God’s wisdom and guidance, trusting in His justice while remaining vigilant against the traps set by the wicked.
