Jeremiah 51:45
My people, goe ye out of the midst of her, and deliuer ye euery man his soule frō the fierce anger of the Lord, Jeremiah 51:45 (KJV)
Historical Background: The book of Jeremiah was written during a tumultuous period in Israel’s history. Jeremiah was a prophet who served the Lord in the time leading up to and during the Babylonian exile. Babylon was a powerful empire that conquered Judah and Jerusalem, exiling the people of Israel. God used Jeremiah to prophesy about Babylon’s judgment and the restoration of His people.
Babylon’s Judgment: Jeremiah 51 records God’s judgment against Babylon for its sins and its oppression of His people. The chapter describes Babylon’s downfall and the devastation that would come upon the city. God declared that He would take vengeance against Babylon for its wickedness and pride.
The Call to God’s People: In Jeremiah 51:45 God addresses His people, urging them to leave Babylon. The phrase “go ye out of the midst of her” (or “go forth out of the midst of Babylon”) refers to the exiles residing there. He commands them to “deliver every man his soul,” to “make your exit,” and to “flee from her,” emphasizing the need for individual responsibility in seeking deliverance.
Fierce Anger of the LORD: The reason for this urgent call is the “fierce anger” or “fierce wrath” of the LORD against Babylon’s idolatry, cruelty, and pride. God’s righteous wrath underscores the seriousness of Babylon’s rebellion, and He commands His people to separate themselves so they will not be caught up in the coming punishment.
Spiritual Significance: While the verse has a specific historical context, Babylon often symbolizes the world system that rebels against God and oppresses His people. In a broader sense, God calls both ancient believers and today’s Christians to distance themselves from sinful influences and to live in obedience to Him. The passage reminds believers of personal responsibility in pursuing a relationship with God and seeking His protection from the consequences of sin.
In summary, Jeremiah 51:45 is a divine call for God’s people to depart from Babylon, symbolizing the need to separate from sinful influences and escape impending judgment. It serves as a reminder that God desires His people to live in obedience to Him and to find refuge in His righteousness.
