Jeremiah 51:56

Because the spoiler is come vpon her, euen vpon Babylon, and her mightie men are taken, euery one of their bowes is broken, for the Lord God of recompenses shall surely requite. Jeremiah 51:56 (KJV)

Jeremiah 51:56 is a vivid component of the larger prophetic oracle against Babylon, announcing the city’s imminent destruction. The verse portrays a “spoiler”—the enemy who will bring devastation—coming upon Babylon’s cities and strongholds. It records that Babylon’s mighty men are taken and that every bow is broken, indicating the total defeat of its warriors.

The passage underscores Babylon’s pride and arrogance, which had made the empire a symbol of wickedness and rebellion against God. The coming of the spoiler will cause the pride of Babylon to fall, the strong men to cease fighting, and the once‑formidable weapons to be shattered. The language of “the sword shall devour Babylon” and “the strong holds thereof shall be consumed” reinforces the picture of complete ruin, while the reference to peoples from distant lands being kindled with fire adds a sense of universal participation in the judgment.

These details demonstrate God’s sovereign authority over nations that oppose Him. The verse affirms that divine recompense is certain: the LORD God of recompenses shall surely requite. In a broader spiritual sense, the text reminds readers that pride and rebellion invite divine judgment, and that humility and obedience are essential before God. It also highlights the futility of human strength when it stands against divine purposes; no nation or individual, however powerful, can escape God’s final will.

Thus, Jeremiah 51:56 serves both as a historical proclamation of Babylon’s downfall and as a timeless warning about the consequences of defying God’s righteousness. It calls believers to trust in God’s justice, to remain humble, and to recognize that God’s word will ultimately prevail over all earthly powers.
