Jeremiah 51:52

Posted on 18 May at 13:59

Wherfore behold, the dayes come, saith the Lord, that I will do iudgment vpon her grauen images, and through all her land the wounded shall grone. Jeremiah 51:52 (KJV)

Context: Jeremiah was a prophet who spoke to the people of Judah before and during their exile in Babylon. In his prophecies, Jeremiah foretold judgment against Babylon, a powerful empire at the time. In the passages of Jeremiah 51, the prophet delivers a message of judgment against Babylon, a dominant empire of the time.

Days of Judgment: The prophecies speak of future events certain to occur, with God declaring judgment upon Babylon. The prophecy announces a forthcoming day of divine judgment for Babylon, and while the exact phrasing “the days come” does not appear in the King James Version, the sense of an imminent, certain judgment is clear in Jeremiah’s words.

Judgment on Graven Images: God would execute judgment on Babylon’s idols and false gods, demonstrating His supremacy over them. Jeremiah declares that God will judge and destroy Babylon’s graven images—its idols and false gods, reflecting the biblical theme that idols are powerless before the living God and that He will demonstrate His supremacy by removing them.

Wounded Shall Groan: Babylon would experience great suffering and lamentation as a result of God’s judgment. The text conveys that Babylon will experience great suffering, and the wounded shall groan throughout the land.

God’s Sovereignty: These prophecies emphasize God’s sovereignty, showing that even mighty empires are subject to His justice. The passage underscores God’s sovereignty and His authority to bring judgment upon nations, regardless of their earthly strength. Babylon’s might does not shield it from divine justice, reminding readers that God remains in control and will enact righteousness. These verses emphasize God’s sovereignty and His ability to bring judgment upon nations, reminding us that He is in control and will execute justice in His perfect timing.

Hope in God’s Justice: While the prophecy highlights judgment and suffering, it also offers assurance that God’s justice is certain. Even amid turmoil, believers can find hope in the knowledge that God sees all and will fulfill His perfect timing for justice.

For example, Jeremiah 50:2 states: “Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.” Jeremiah 50:30 further describes the consequences: “Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the Lord.”
