Jeremiah 52:19
And the basons, and the firepans, and the bolles, and the cauldrons, and the candlestickes, and the spoones, and the cuppes; that which was of golde, in golde, and that which was of siluer, in siluer, tooke the captaine of the guard away: Jeremiah 52:19 (KJV)
And the basons, and the firepans, and the bowls, and the caldrons, and the candlesticks, and the spoons, and the cups; that which was of gold in gold, and that which was of silver in silver, took the captain of the guard away.
“And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD, did the Chaldees break in pieces, and carried all the brass of them to Babylon.”
This verse is found in the final chapter of the Book of Jeremiah, which chronicles the prophecies and events surrounding the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to deliver messages of warning and judgment to the people of Judah. In this particular verse, Jeremiah describes the destruction and looting of the temple in Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, who were a people from the region of Babylon. The Chaldees, under the leadership of King Nebuchadnezzar, besieged Jerusalem and eventually conquered it in 587 B.C.
The “pillars of brass” mentioned in the verse refer to the bronze pillars called Jachin and Boaz, which were prominent features in the temple’s structure. They were positioned at the entrance of the temple, symbolising stability and strength. The “bases” refer to the bronze stands upon which the pillars stood, and the “brasen sea” refers to a large bronze basin used for ritual purification. The Chaldeans, after breaching the walls of Jerusalem, not only destroyed the temple but also took away the valuable brass or bronze items from the temple. They dismantled the pillars, bases, and the large basin, carrying the brass back to Babylon as spoils of war.
This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the fulfilment of God’s judgment upon His people. The destruction of the temple and the looting of its valuable items were part of the punishment for the people’s idolatry and rebellion against God. The loss of these sacred objects, which held significant religious and symbolic value, underscored the severity of their situation and the depth of their spiritual decline. Jeremiah 52:17 serves as a historical record, testifying to the fulfilment of Jeremiah’s prophecies and the faithfulness of God’s word. It highlights the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the consequences that can result from turning away from Him.
