Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

Context

God speaks through Jeremiah to confront the people of Judah and Jerusalem for their idolatry and disobedience. In the preceding verses, God has told Jeremiah not to pray for the people because He will not listen. This verse explains why: their sins are open and widespread, not hidden or occasional.

The verse is a rhetorical question from God to Jeremiah, pointing to the blatant idolatry in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem. The people’s actions are public and deliberate, showing their rejection of divine authority. They have turned places meant for righteousness and worship into centres of wickedness.

The following verses specify the idolatrous practices: children gather wood, fathers kindle the fire, women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven, and drink offerings are poured out to other gods. This verse underscores that sin is not hidden from God. The people’s claim that the LORD will not see them is contradicted by God’s own question to Jeremiah.
