Jeremiah 8:15

We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

Jeremiah 8:15 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic work of the Old Testament in which the prophet ministered during a tumultuous period in Judah’s history. He warned the people of impending judgment because of their idolatry and persistent disobedience to God’s covenant. Jeremiah 8:15 is part of the prophet’s lament over Judah as enemy invasion from the north draws near (Jeremiah 8:14-16).

The people cry out that they looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, but behold trouble. The Hebrew word for peace is “shalom,” which implies wholeness and well-being, not merely the absence of conflict. Their longing for peace and healing reflects desperation born of both external threat and internal turmoil. Yet their hope was misplaced because they sought peace apart from repentance and obedience to God.

The contrast between human expectation and divine reality is stark: they looked for good, but only trouble came. This absence of good is attributed to their disobedience and departure from God’s ways, which inevitably brings consequences. The same lament appears again in Jeremiah 14:19, showing the depth and persistence of their distress.

True peace can only be found in a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ (John 14:27). For the Christian, this points to the need for genuine repentance and faith in Christ, who is our peace (Ephesians 2:14). The verse warns against relying on human promises or worldly solutions instead of turning to God.

The passage teaches us to seek peace in the right places—primarily through a relationship with God—and warns that a life contrary to God’s commands leads to trouble and the absence of good. Believers should examine where they place their hope for peace and healing, ensuring it is in God alone, and should respond to God’s warnings with humility and repentance.

Even in the bleak situation described, God remains faithful. His ultimate desire is repentance and restoration. When we turn to God in repentance, He offers forgiveness, renewal, and the promise of true peace. Jeremiah 8:15 calls believers today to pursue genuine peace through Christ, to heed the warnings against turning away from God, and to trust in His steadfast faithfulness and desire for our restoration.
