Jeremiah 9:13

Posted on 18 May at 15:02

“And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on

Verse: “And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;” (Jeremiah 9:13, KJV)

Context:The book of Jeremiah is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was a prophet who lived during the period leading up to and following the Babylonian exile. He was called by God to proclaim messages of judgment and warning to the people of Judah because of their disobedience and idolatry.

Rebellion against God’s law:The verse starts with the Lord expressing the reason for the impending judgment upon the people of Judah. He says they have forsaken His law, which He had set before them. God had given His people the Law through Moses, containing His commandments and instructions for righteous living. However, the people of Judah had turned away from God’s law and disregarded His commandments.

Disobedience to God’s voice:In addition to forsaking God’s law, the people of Judah had also not obeyed God’s voice. This refers to their refusal to heed the messages and warnings brought to them by the prophets, including Jeremiah. God had sent His messengers to call the people back to Him and to urge them to repent of their sins. However, they chose to ignore the voice of God and persisted in their rebellious ways.

Failure to walk in God’s ways:The verse concludes by stating that the people of Judah did not walk in God’s ways. This means that they did not live according to the principles and teachings outlined in His law. They turned away from God’s path of righteousness and instead followed their own desires and pursued idolatry and wickedness.

Application:

  • Importance of God’s law:The verse highlights the significance of God’s law in the life of believers. As followers of God, we are called to honour and obey His commandments. The law serves as a guide for righteous living and helps us understand God’s standards of holiness. We should take the time to study His Word, meditate on it, and apply its principles in our daily lives.
  • Listening to God’s voice:Just as the people of Judah were called to listen to God’s voice through the prophets, we should also pay attention to the voice of God in our lives. This includes reading and studying the Scriptures, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and being open to the messages He may send through other believers. Obeying His voice requires humility and a willingness to submit our will to His.
  • Walking in God’s ways:It is not enough to simply know God’s commandments or listen to His voice; we must also actively walk in His ways. This involves aligning our actions, attitudes, and choices with His principles. As Christians, we are called to be salt and light in the world, demonstrating the transformative power of God’s grace and reflecting His character through our conduct.

Conclusion:

Jeremiah 9:13 reminds us of the consequences of forsaking God’s law, disobeying His voice, and failing to walk in His ways. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of living according to God’s commands and being attentive to His voice. By studying His Word, listening to His voice, and walking in His ways, we can experience the blessings of a life lived in obedience to Him.
