Jeremiah 9:12

Who is the wise man that may vnderstand this, and who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord hath spoken, that hee may declare it; for what the land perisheth, and is burnt vp like a wildernesse that none passeth through? Jeremiah 9:12 (KJV)

In the book of Jeremiah the prophet delivers a message of judgment and warning to the people of Judah. The nation had turned away from God, practising idolatry and engaging in various sins. God sent Jeremiah to proclaim the consequences of their actions and to call the people to repentance.

The verse begins with a question: “Who is the wise man, that may understand this?” (or “Is there any wise man that may understand these?”). This question highlights the importance of seeking wisdom and understanding from God. It implies that only those who are truly wise, who have a deep understanding of God’s ways, can comprehend the message being delivered, emphasizing the need for spiritual discernment and insight.

The passage also notes that the mouth of the LORD hath spoken. This phrase underscores the divine origin and authority of the proclamation. God speaks through His chosen servants to declare His will and reveal His plans to His people.

The verse then describes the state of the land: it is perished and burned up like a wilderness. This vivid imagery paints a picture of desolation and devastation, signifying the consequences of the people’s disobedience and their turning away from God. The once‑flourishing land is now barren and uninhabited.

It concludes that none passes through the land. The empty pathways further emphasize the abandonment and isolation that result from the people’s rebellion against God, highlighting the severity of the judgment.

Application: Jeremiah 9:12 reminds believers of the importance of seeking wisdom and understanding from God. It encourages a humble, teachable heart toward Scripture, recognizing that true wisdom comes from God. It also warns of the devastating effects of sin and the dire consequences of turning away from the Lord.
