Context

The Book of Job tells of a righteous man who suffered great loss. His friends came to comfort him, but they argued that his suffering must be punishment for sin. Job disagreed. In this chapter, he answers them with a pointed question about what all creation already knows.

Meaning

Job asks, “Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?” The words “in all these” point back to the animals, birds, and fish mentioned in Job 12:7-8. Job says that every part of creation testifies that God’s hand has done all things. The “hand of the LORD” is a picture of God’s power and active care. This is not a hidden truth. It is plain to anyone who looks at the world.

Job’s question is also a gentle rebuke. If even the lower creatures know God’s work, then people have no excuse for ignorance. Job’s friends claimed to understand God’s ways completely. Job shows that God’s wisdom is far greater than their neat explanations. Creation itself proves that God works in ways they cannot fully grasp.
