Job 14:1

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

Job 14:1 (KJV)

Job speaks these words during his painful dialogue with friends who insist that suffering proves hidden sin. Yet Job is described as righteous and blameless, and he has lost wealth, children, and health. His lament arises from real anguish, not from doubt about God’s existence. In this larger conversation, Job and his friends discuss the nature of human life and the hardships he is experiencing.

The phrase “man that is born of a woman” points to every human being. It reminds us that all people share the same fragile origin and mortal nature. “Of few days” stresses how short life is when compared with God’s eternity. “Full of trouble” admits that hardship, pain, and sorrow mark our earthly journey. Job does not exaggerate; he states what he has experienced. His words emphasize human fragility and vulnerability, acknowledging our shared mortality and the limitations of earthly existence.

This verse echoes the curse of Genesis 3:17-19, where pain and toil enter human history because of sin. Job’s words also prepare for his later cry of hope in Job 19:25-27, where he declares that his Redeemer lives. Thus, the same man who laments briefly also looks forward to resurrection. The Book of Job explores the problem of suffering and why righteous people sometimes face hardship, making this verse part of a poetic and philosophical reflection on God’s justice.

We often expect life to be long and comfortable, but Job teaches us to be honest about its brevity and trouble. Such honesty does not lead to despair. Instead, it turns our hearts toward God, who alone gives meaning and strength for each difficult day. Recognizing our limited time can help us depend on God more fully, especially when trials come.

When you face trials, remember that God sees your frailty and your pain. He does not promise a trouble-free life, but He promises to be with you. Let Job’s lament become your prayer, and let his hope become your anchor.
