Job 15:10

With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

Job 15:10 (KJV)

Eliphaz speaks here during his second reply to Job. Job has insisted on his own innocence and wisdom, and Eliphaz answers with sharp words. He points to the aged men among his companions, claiming they are older than Job’s father. In ancient Near Eastern culture, gray hair and long life were honored as signs of wisdom and authority. Eliphaz’s appeal is a rhetorical move, not a gentle offer of help.

Eliphaz uses age as proof that his counsel deserves attention. He says, in effect, that the elders on his side carry more weight than Job’s own family. The Hebrew text uses singular forms for “grayheaded” and “aged,” suggesting a group that stands together. This is a human argument, not a word from God. The reader is meant to evaluate his claim critically, not accept it blindly.

Job himself had said that wisdom is with the ancient (Job 12:12). Eliphaz turns that idea back on Job, using it to support his own view. Yet the Bible also teaches that age alone does not guarantee truth. God later rebukes Eliphaz and his friends for speaking wrongly about Him (Job 42:7). Human authority, even when backed by tradition, is not the ultimate source of truth.

Respect for the elderly is right and commanded (Leviticus 19:32). Their experience can guide younger believers. But all counsel must be tested against God’s Word. Job’s friends made false assumptions about his suffering, so their age and confidence did not make them correct. Seek wisdom from many sources, but measure every word by Scripture. Listen humbly to the aged, yet hold every teaching up to the light of God’s truth.

Human authority, even when backed by age and tradition, is not the final judge. True wisdom comes from God, who gives it generously to those who ask (James 1:5). Let this verse remind us to listen humbly to the aged, yet to hold every teaching up to the light of God’s truth. In the end, God’s own wisdom surpasses the best human counsel.
