Job 21:17

How oft is the candle of the wicked put out? and how oft commeth their destruction vpon them? God distributeth sorrowes in his anger. Job 21:17 (KJV)

how oft

cometh their destruction upon them!

God distributeth sorrows in his anger. Job 21:17 (KJV)

The book of Job is renowned for its exploration of the problem of suffering and the righteous response to it. In Job 21:17 the protagonist is answering the speeches of his friends, who try to explain his afflictions as the result of personal wickedness. Job challenges that explanation and offers his own perspective on the apparent prosperity of the wicked.

The metaphor of a candle being put out represents the life, prosperity, and joy of the wicked, which can be extinguished or destroyed by God. Job observes that God does bring destruction upon the wicked, yet he questions how often and how promptly such judgment occurs. He is troubled by the fact that the wicked often seem to enjoy a trouble‑free existence while the righteous, like himself, endure sorrow.

This tension raises the classic theological issue of theodicy: how a just and loving God can permit evil and suffering to exist. Job’s contemplation of the prosperity of the wicked versus the suffering of the righteous highlights the apparent discrepancy between human expectations of justice and the reality of divine governance.

Throughout the narrative Job’s understanding of God and suffering evolves. At first he questions God’s actions and longs for a face‑to‑face encounter to argue his case. As the story progresses he comes to recognize his limited perspective and acknowledges the greatness and mystery of God’s ways.

Job 21:17 therefore invites believers to reflect on the prosperity of the wicked and the suffering of the righteous, to acknowledge the tension between our sense of justice and God’s divine plan, and to trust in God’s ultimate justice and sovereignty even when the reasons behind our circumstances remain hidden.
