Hebrews 12:12
Wherefore lift vp the handes which hang downe, and the feeble knees. Hebrews 12:12 (KJV)
Hebrews 12 is a chapter that encourages believers to persevere in their faith despite challenges and hardships. It draws upon the imagery of a race, urging Christians to run with endurance and fix their eyes on Jesus, the ultimate example of faithfulness.
In this verse the author uses metaphorical language to convey an important message. The phrase “lift up the hands which hang down” refers to strengthening or encouraging those who are discouraged or spiritually weakened, while “the feeble knees” represents those whose faith is faltering or who lack the strength to continue their journey.
The verse calls believers to offer support and encouragement to one another. In the Christian journey there are times when individuals feel discouraged, tired, or spiritually weak. Fellow believers are urged to come alongside those who are struggling and lift them up through acts of kindness, prayer, wise counsel, or simply being a source of comfort and companionship.
The image of lifting up hands and strengthening feeble knees also suggests a call to spiritual renewal and revitalization. It emphasizes the importance of seeking God’s strength and relying on Him to overcome difficulties. By lifting our hands in surrender and prayer we acknowledge our dependence on God and invite His power to work in our lives, while strengthening feeble knees implies regaining confidence and determination to persevere in the Christian walk.
Throughout Scripture we find examples of this principle. Moses faced numerous obstacles leading the Israelites out of Egypt, and he received help from Aaron and Hur, who held up his hands during battle (Exodus 17:12). Paul likewise encouraged believers to support the weak and comfort one another (1 Thessalonians 5:14). The wording of Hebrews 12:12 itself echoes Isaiah 35:3, “Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.”
Application of this verse reminds believers to be mindful of those who are struggling in their faith and to actively provide support and encouragement. It prompts us to look beyond our own challenges, reach out to others in need, and seek God’s strength and renewal in our own lives when we face difficulties or feel spiritually weak.
