Context

Job speaks these words while answering his friends, who insist that the wicked are punished in this life and the righteous prosper. Job disagrees. He points to what he sees: wicked people often enjoy good health and plenty. This verse is part of his larger argument that earthly circumstances do not always match a person’s moral standing.

Meaning

The phrase “His breasts are full of milk” pictures abundance and nourishment. In an agricultural society, such imagery meant a life of plenty. The second phrase, “his bones are moistened with marrow,” points to strength and vitality. Marrow, the nourishing substance inside bones, stood for health and well-being. Together, these words describe a wicked man who seems to thrive physically and materially.

Job’s point is not that wickedness brings prosperity, but that prosperity is not proof of righteousness. His friends held a simple belief: suffering shows sin, and success shows favor. Job’s own painful experience contradicted that idea. He was suffering, yet he knew he had not earned it by wickedness. Meanwhile, the wicked often appeared strong and satisfied.

Biblical connections

This theme appears elsewhere in Scripture. In Matthew 5:45, Jesus teaches that God sends rain on the just and the unjust, showing that outward blessings are not divided by moral worth. The same truth appears in Hebrews 11, where faithful people endure hardship without receiving immediate reward. These passages agree with Job: present prosperity is not a reliable measure of God’s favor.

Application

This verse warns us not to envy the success of those who ignore God. It also comforts those who suffer while doing right. Our standing before God does not depend on wealth, health, or comfort. We can trust that God sees all and will set things right in His time, even when we cannot understand His ways now.
