Job 26:12

He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.

Job 26:12 (KJV)

Job speaks here in answer to his friend Bildad. He has suffered terrible loss, yet he does not abandon faith. Instead, he declares the greatness of God, who rules over creation and history. This verse sits within a longer speech where Job marvels that people hear only a whisper of God’s power (Job 26:14).

The verse names two actions of God. First, He “divideth the sea with his power.” This recalls the creation account, when God separated the waters (Genesis 1:9-10), and also the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14). God controls the chaotic deep; it obeys His command. Second, “by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.” The Hebrew word for “proud” can also mean “Rahab,” a sea monster that symbolized chaos and evil. So God defeats both natural chaos and spiritual pride, and He does so with wisdom, not random force. His power and understanding work together perfectly.

Scripture consistently teaches that God humbles the arrogant. Proverbs 16:5 warns that the proud are an abomination to the Lord. James 4:6 says God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Job’s words fit this pattern: God’s power and His understanding work together to bring down what exalts itself. This theme also points to Christ, who calmed the storm and defeated the forces of evil, showing the same authority over chaos.

This truth calls believers to awe. The same God who stills the sea also sees the proud heart. Therefore, we should approach Him with reverence, not with self-reliance. When suffering confuses us, we can trust that His wisdom governs every situation. We do not need to understand all His ways; we need to submit to His rule. His power is not distant or cold; it is exercised with understanding, for our good and His glory.

Job praised God even while he grieved. His words remind us that God’s power is not distant or cold. It is exercised with understanding, for our good and His glory. Let this verse quiet our fears and humble our pride, so that we rest in the Almighty who alone brings order out of chaos.
