“When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me”

Verse: “When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me” (Job 29:11, KJV).

Context: The book of Job is a profound exploration of the problem of human suffering. Job, a righteous man, undergoes severe trials and losses, testing his faith and challenging his understanding of God’s ways. In chapter 29, Job reflects on his former prosperity and the respect he once enjoyed in the community.

The Blessing of a Good Reputation: Job speaks of the honour and respect he received from others when they heard about him. People blessed him because of his righteous conduct and godly character. It is a reminder of the value of having a good reputation and the impact it can have on our relationships and influence.

The Power of a Good Witness: Job acknowledges that the eye witnessing his actions served as a testimony to his integrity. His actions aligned with his words, and others took notice. This verse highlights the importance of living a life of integrity and consistency, as our actions can speak louder than words.

Reflections on Human Response: The verse implies that people responded positively to Job’s presence and conduct. It suggests that Job’s character and behaviour had a positive influence on others. This raises the question of how our actions and attitudes affect those around us and whether we are making a positive impact on the lives of others.

The Desire for Restoration: Job longs for a return to the days when he was respected and honoured. This chapter showcases his reminiscence of past glories, emphasising his desire for restoration and the yearning for a return to his former state of prosperity and influence.

Application: Job’s reflection on the blessings of a good reputation and a positive witness challenges us to consider our own conduct and character. Are we living in a way that brings honour to God and blesses others? Do our actions align with our words? Are we making a positive impact on the lives of those around us?

  • Ultimately, this verse from Job reminds us of the significance of our conduct, reputation, and influence. It encourages us to strive for integrity, consistency, and godliness, recognising that our actions and character can have a lasting impact on others.
